The Lysander
![]() | The Lysander trailer-sailer was designed in 1963 by Percy Blandford specifically for home construction by the amateur using marine ply panels laid on frames without the need for specialized skills or tools. The standard boat is 17'(5.18m) long though many 'stretched' 19' (5.8m) versions have been built. The original design was gunter rigged to facilitate trailing but over the years Bermudan, cutter, gaff and even junk rig variants have been used with complete success and safety illustrating the stability and seaworthiness of the boat. Although originally conceived as a river and estuary craft with a draught of less than 2ft 6in a number of owners have made many longer offshore passages and returned to tell the tale! |
- Length overall 17ft (5.18m)
- Draught 27in
- Weight about 800 lbs
- Main sail 90 s.ft jib 33 s.ft
- Sleeps two in cabin, possible two more in a boom tent.

As a member of the LOA you receive our quarterly Newsletter which will keep you abreast of changes in the Boat Safety Scheme together with technical articles designed to help you build, maintain, or modify your boat to your needs. The newsletter also contains information about the Meets which are through out the season at various locations around the country ranging from the Lake District in the north to Plymouth in the south providing a wide spectrum of sea and inland sailing with an opportunity to meet other like minded individuals both ashore and afloat. Wherever you live there are LOA members (and Lysanders) not far from you.
Membership also brings access to our Technical Officer who can advise on any of the odd problems you may encounter while building or sailing your Lysander. We also operate an insurance scheme giving you first class cover at advantageous rates.
